Heritage Politics in Honduras: From the Monumental to the Mundane

Lena Mortensen is an anthropologist and assistant professor in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Lena is interested in the construction of heritage and identity, specifically through the contexts of archaeological practice and archaeological tourism. She is involved with ongoing ethnographic
research at the archaeological park of Copán and elsewhere in Honduras, which looks at the relationships between archaeology, tourism, nationalism, and indigenous movements. She is co-editor of the volume Ethnographies and Archaeologies: Iterations of the Past (under advance contract with the University of Florida Press) and has recently published chapters in the books, "Site Museums in Latin America" (2006) and
"Archaeology, Cultural Heritage and the Antiquities Trade" (2006), as well as several journal articles. Lena is also currently participating in a multidisciplinary collaborative research project on “Intellectual Property Issues in Cultural Heritage” wherein she focuses on the intellectual property implications of archaeological tourism. Before coming to UT Scarborough, Lena was the assistant director of the Center for Heritage Resource Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park.
