Mexican nationalism in recent history, 1970-2006

Fernando Vizcaino is a visiting scholar from Mexico, sponsored by the Munk Centre for International Studies and Latin American Studies at the University of Toronto, by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the Consulate General for Mexico in Toronto. He was born in Mexico City and raised in the Villa of Coyoacan. His was a typical urban Mexican family, Spanish-speaking, Catholic and "Mestiza". He studied Sociology, History and holds a PhD in Political Science. But he was also introduced to the literature and social issues of Mexico through his reading of Octavio Paz. Professor Vizcaino´s first book explored the life and work of this Mexican poet: Biografía Política de Octavio Paz, and was published in Spain 15 years ago, in 1993. Four years later he entered the Instituto de Investigaciones Sociales, which is part of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. There, he has been teaching and researching on Mexican nationalism and multiculturalism. His book El nacionalismo mexicano en los tiempos del multiculturalismo y la globalización was published in 2004. He continues to be interested in these subjects and on national minorities and interactions with the State. Also, Fernando Vizcaíno is participating in the upcoming Bicentenary of Mexican Independence. To this end, he is working on a book on the Cádiz Cortes and the Independence of Mexico.
