Professor Rivas is a scholar of contemporary Latin American literary, film, and cultural studies. His particular interests include nineteenth-century Latin America and the ideological legacy of Simón Bolívar. cultural resistance, non-canonical, subaltern, and testimonial literature, issues of representation in trans-american texts, and US Latino/a texts. His work also explores the politics of culture and media, and postmodern and postcolonial theory and criticism. Among his recent publications is Incursiones culturales: El testimonio guerrillero de Alí Gómez García (Caracas, 2006). Estado cultural his documentary film on the shifting paradigms of Venezuelan culture is now in post-production.
